Do You Need A Sports Physical or Pre-participation Physical (PPE) in Nashville, TN?

Sports Physicals, also known as pre-participation examinations (PPEs), are used as a screening tool for potential conditions or problems that may affect athletes on and off the field.  Most middle school, high school, and amateur teams require each athlete to have a physical prior to participation in practice or competition. The sports physical is ideally done about 6 weeks prior to the start of an activity to make sure any further evaluation or treatment is completed prior to the activity. Standard practice recommends yearly physicals to clear athletes for activity.

What Does a Sports/Pre-participation Physical Include?

The sports physical consists of a detailed medical and social history as well as a complete physical exam with a focus on cardiac, neurological, and musculoskeletal function. Normally, lab tests such as urine or blood tests are NOT needed.  X-rays or additional imaging are usually not necessary, unless there is an injury that needs to be addressed at that time. Nashville Hip Institute at TOA (NHI) has x-ray and physical therapy on-site, which makes any treatment needed after a pre-participation physical seamless.  Amy Jean, PA-C is a certified physician assistant with experience as an athletic trainer for middle school, high school, and college athletes. Amy performs all of our sports physicals here at NHI, and you can be confident your athlete will be ready to go after a visit with Amy!
